Two dots (located under the = on a phone keyboard) placed on the outside of a word or phrase to add emphasis: “You’ve done a •beautiful• job of bedazzling.”
Particularly useful in texts, as traditional forms of emphasis are inefficient/impossible (italicizing, underlining) or irritating/offensive (capitalization).
Asterisks can be used in place of dots, but they are inelegant and can create confusion.

Get the KNERBLE mug.by Rotten Tanx August 29, 2008
Get the Kerble mug. This is the word that my (then) 4 year old daughter told me she had done to herself when she hurt her leg . . . 'Dad (she said crying) . . . I've knebbled myself!' - This word is now commonly used in our household - and is spreading through the local village primary school.
