If you understand graffiti as a "'guerrilla art' attempting to reclaim public space through clandestine and spontenous intervnetions of areseol on walls," then you can easily make the jump to "guerrilla gardening" as a parallel idea - replacing the 'areseol on walls' with 'seeds in soil.'

Guerrilla Gardening 

Planting edible plants in spaces designated for shrubbery and otherwise useless foilage. Apartment complex gardens, public parks, and golf courses are excellent targets.
Anywhere nature is being forced to "look pretty" rather than be useful is a good place for some Guerrilla Gardening.

I got sick of seeing nature constrained to human aesthetics so late last night I went out guerrilla gardening.

Guerrilla gardeners plant crops anywhere hedges are groomed or where inedible plants are contained in zones.

When government owned land is forcefully taken by a the people and turned into a community garden in which members of the community claim small plots and bust their ass to cultivate land for public benefit. This results in more community involvement and creates a sense of empowerment among the community members.
In Roxbury, Massachusetts, the community claimed a plot of land to start a garden by guerilla gardening.
