However, even under occupation, Donetsk is an undeniably Ukrainian city.

A breakaway region in Ukraine located in the Donbass. For the past 8 years it has been shelled and ruthlessly terrorized by Ukriane. On February 21, 2022, the Russian Federation recognized the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic as independent states.
