Scientifically Privileged Position

A position within scientific discourse that is granted unearned authority—not because its evidence is stronger but because it's associated with dominant institutions, funders, or research traditions. A scientifically privileged position gets funded, published, and cited; its findings are reported as news; its experts are invited to panels. Alternative positions struggle for recognition, dismissed as fringe or pseudoscience regardless of their merits. The scientifically privileged position doesn't have to prove itself harder; it's already trusted. This privilege shapes what counts as science, what questions get asked, what answers are accepted.

Scientifically Privileged Position Example: "Her research, done in community with marginalized populations, was dismissed as 'not rigorous.' His research, funded by a pharmaceutical company, published in top journals, was taken as gospel. The scientifically privileged position wasn't better; it was just privileged. Epistemologically Privileged Position

A position within discourse that is granted unearned authority over what counts as knowledge—not because its claims are better supported but because it's associated with dominant institutions, cultures, or power structures. An epistemologically privileged position gets to define what counts as evidence, what methods are valid, what sources are credible. Its knowledge is taken seriously by default; alternative knowledge systems must fight to be heard. This privilege is invisible to those who hold it—they just think they're being reasonable. The epistemologically privileged position is the seat of epistemic power, the place from which reality is defined.

Example: "In every discussion, his knowledge was taken as given. Hers was questioned, challenged, dismissed as 'anecdotal' or 'unscientific.' The epistemologically privileged position wasn't in his arguments; it was in his position. He spoke from the university, from the mainstream, from power. She spoke from the margins. The difference wasn't knowledge; it was privilege."

Poisoning the Position Fallacy

A political form of Poisoning the Well where a position is discredited by associating it with extreme or reviled ideologies, regardless of the actual views of those who hold it. Accusing all BRICS+ supporters of "Nazbol/Duginism/Z Nationalism" regardless of their actual reasons is a classic example. The move poisons the position by painting anyone who holds it as tainted by association with extremism. The fallacy lies in treating political alignment as evidence of ideology, ignoring the diversity of reasons people might support something. It's guilt by association applied to positions, not just people—poisoning the position so no one can hold it without being tainted.

Fallacy of Objective Position

A rhetorical move where one claims to occupy an "objective position" free from bias, then uses that claimed objectivity to dismiss others as biased—while simultaneously accusing them of "appeal to authority" whenever they cite experts. The fallacy combines the worst of both worlds: the arrogance of claiming objectivity (Objectivity Bias) with the weaponization of fallacy accusations (Fallacy of Authority accusations). The result is a position that can't be challenged: any expert cited is dismissed as "appeal to authority," while one's own claims are protected by the mantle of "objectivity." It's a rhetorical fortress with no windows.

"She cited climate scientists. 'Appeal to authority!' he declared. He then stated his own opinion as 'just the objective truth.'
