To fully understand the themes and story you usually have to watch the films multiple times. The creative use of representation is reminiscent of the symbolism found in dreams. Genres include neo-noir, murder mystery, surrealistic horror, experimental, and maybe comedy.

Good David Lynch Film: Eraserhead, Elephant man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks season 1 and 2, Inland Empire, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, and ALL of his short films. Bad David Lynch Film: Wild at Heart, Dune, Twin Peaks movie(unless you loved the show)
