Used as a general term of exclamation or surprise similar to oh my lord, or oh my goodness, or oh shit. Mostly used by people in the 1930's, 1940's, and 1950's. Possibly a minced oath (softened form of swearing) substitute for "For the Lord's sake."

A pile of dog poopy in your yard or any general area you are walking. Same as a dogpile.

Be careful when you are walking through Seymour's yard, it's loaded with land mines from his two St. Bernard dogs.

The most adorable of sea creatures that has evolved to live on land in order to attend law school. The land squid will be your best friend, but does NOT apprecitate haters. The land squid spends most of its time doing homework and studying in her little squid cave. The little land squid becomes most pleased when it has a piece of candy, a rare steak, or noonies.

A mindless liberal automoton who claps and barks like a seal in response to pabulum spewed by like-minded talking heads. A land seal thinks that Bill Maher is witty and irreverent when sharing such comedic brilliance as "Bush is stupid" or "the pope is a nazi." Land seals think that the more vigorously they clap and laugh to such inane commentary, the smarter they appear. Land seals universally want Jon Stewart inside them.

Bill Maher moved his show out to LA from NYC; there were more land seals out there.

Literally: grab for newly available land.
Figuratively: grab for control over anything not yet controlled.

Expression originated in 19th Century when West was available for anyone who wanted to claim land and settle on it.

Israel is being accused of a 'land grab' (Search for 'land grab' and Israel on Google Advanced).

Then it was used regarding those wanting to control airwaves and recently for those wanting to control Cyberspace.
