A person or entity who opportunistically uses the hype around an unfolding event to promote or bring attention to themselves or their cause. Often occurs around 'controversial' news articles or breaking global events.

McDonalds hype leeched the Beyonce incident to bring attention to their new burger deal.

A language leech is a person who only wants to be your friend, or pretends to be your friend, because they want to learn English from you. People who teach English in non-English speaking countries can't help but meet language leeches.

This guy invited me to hang out and then he took me to a coffeeshop and pulled out his IELTS preparation book like that was normal. What a language leech!
