originally meant: happy, excited, merry, exuberant, etc.
Now it is:
1) referring to members of the homosexual community
2) used to refer to something that is annoying, stupid, unfortunate, or altogether unwanted.
Controversy:
-Use number two has led to a political correctness backlash against this use, I see nothing wrong with this use it is just a word, and people have their first amendment right to use it, but political correctness activists do not see it that way.
-Another issue that has arisen out of use #2 is the accusations that the people that use the word gay, are closet homosexuals, trying to distance themselves by making themselves seem more masculine. I do not agree with this; once again this is just a word, a slang term like cool or hella.

The gang were round at my place having a gay old time.
"I just thought I'd like to let you all know," said Darryl, "that I'm gay."
"I always thought you were pretty gay," said Lyn with a wink.
"I hate it when people use that word like that," complained David. "It's totally homophobic."
The others rolled their eyes. David was loud, opinionated and occasionally irritated the others. Sylvia could stand no more.
"Shut up you sanctimonious buffoon!" she exploded. "The word has changed its meaning and you're being really gay about it!"

My Opinion: Do not get offended with the word gay. It is a piece of literature. And when being used in the right context and clearly stood that it was not trying to insult the actual homosexuality then there should be no problem in using the word. However when describing a person do be careful with how you use the word because that may set off an offense to them or others around you remember to be respectful.
