Estonian phenomenon

Share definition Flag
Estonia is a small country in northern Europe that feels and would like to be nordic, but actually belongs to the baltic countries south of the baltic sea. Due to its size and since just about 1.4 million people live there (for reference: New York has 8.4 million inhabitants) , somthing that has been dubbed the "estonian phenomenon" can be witnessed here. The term describes that everyone practically knows everyone or at least someone who knows them. This makes gossip equally more interesting and more dangerous, since the person you are gossiping about will almost certainly hear about it. Sometimes Estonia feels like a big family gathering of a country where even someone who seems to be a random stranger has most likely some kind of relation to you.
"Oh hey, I know the girl who just delivered our food... that was an awkward interaction"
"How do you know her?"

"Its just a case of estonian phenomenon, my classmate used to work at her families store and she used to play soccer with my second cousin. Did you know that she broke up with her Boyfriend?"

Estonians are an extremely happy group of people with lineage stemming from the small European nation Estonia. Predominantly blonde haired, blue eyed beauties. You can distinguish "kodu Eestlased" native Estonians from non-Estonian born Estonians by their lanky, disproportionate limbs (ex. legs and arms looking like the appendages of a daddy long leg spider). Real Estonians drink vodka for the most part until they are good and jolly, or black out and engage in activity with the opposite sex that is never really that awkward in the morning (as is often with Americans). With an extremely high tolerance for alcohol, what better way to end a celebratory evening (celebratory evening= anytime 2 or more Estonians are together and drinking) than crossing right arm over left and holding hands in a circle known as Soprus Ring, humming notes and saying prayers in a foreign tongue (Estonian) startling innocent non-Estonian onlookers who imagine they are witnessing cult activity.
Karl has long disproportionate arms and legs and appears to be a Viking. Karl must be an Estonian.

Jaan speaks Russian and attends sportipaev but Ei Raagi Eesti Keel. Jaan is not really an Estonian.

Striver

Share definition Flag
The striver is an interesting phenomenon that is seen across college campuses. In essence, the striver is an over-achiever who comes from a working or middle class family. He may be an immigrant. He may have been a slacker in HS who was "born again" into an academic wunderkind. Or he may just be an over-achiever who is keeping at it.

The striver is willing to sacrifice his social life at the expense of Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. The striver is the guy who stays at the library long after you are gone. The striver is the guy who takes 30 credits/semester and considers anything below an A/4.0 failure. The striver doesn't work on campus, he is too busy finding ways to pad his resume instead of working retail or workstudy. The striver lets his grades pay his education by applying to ten scholarships a year.

The striver is a future Soros/Fullbright/Rhodes/Gates/Marshall/etc. fellow. The striver lives to study. For the striver, their fun comes from the rewards they expect to receive in return for their diligence. Be it Law School, B-School, academia, or politics. The striver seeks to find the American Dream through academic success.
Anthony was a striver. He transfered from a TTT to an IVY and graduated in 2 years. He studied his ass off and went to Penn Law. He got a Biglaw offer. But lost it all because of an unmoderated mesasgeboard.

Successful strivers:
- Barack Obama
- Harold Koh

- Just forget about it, you don't have enough SkyPesos to fly anywhere.
