Placebeau Effect

Occurs when a girl thinks she has found a man that will make all her dreams come true. It doesn't matter about reality--because she views him as her 'beau'--she becomes oblivious to his shortcomings and is totally enamored with the smallest of things. Even a one-word text message becomes loaded with meaning for her.

(Girl looks at her phone and smiles, all dreamy-eyed)

Roommate: what's up? You look tooooo happy...

Girl: oh nothing, I just got the sweetest text from Cedric!

Roommate: (cynically) Really! What pearl of wonderfulness did he say, if you don't mind my asking..

Girl: (with stars in her eyes) he said "Sup!"

Roommate: (muttering quietly) It's the friggin' placebeau effect at work again...

placebeau

Someone who outwardly pretends to be a caring/loving boyfriend, but is merely "there for show".

Serving as a placebeau is not necessarily a negative or even particularly dishonest occupation; a lady may actually request your accompanying her as a "place-holder" during certain public excursions/appearances so that she can feel safer, more confident, less "out of place" or the "odd one out", etc.
