Noun.
1. Acronym for the Santa Cruz Operation.
2. A company with little or no moral codes, with horribly dishonest PR workers (Blake Stowell) and who uses the media to boost their already inflated stock price. This company seeks to charge money for Linux because it supposedly contains stolen lines of UNIX System V code, however, they have yet to prove their accusations in the form of lines of stolen code, documentation, etc.
3. A business model which is based on an RIAA-like model of "sue and alienate customers", however, involves taking large companies to court and just randomly sending out licensing requests for software which they don't hold the copyrights for.

Acronym for Self Check Out. Also known as a self-serve checkout. The alternative to a manned register at a supermarket. A group of registers seen in new and refurbished supermarkets that allows customers to scan and pay for their own items, hopefully with minimal assistance from a staff member.
The staff member must press 'Go to SCO' after assisting the customer in the assistance mode so the register returns to the customer 'scan and bag' mode.

SCO can refer to two separate computer companies:
The first was the Santa Cruz Operation, which made SCO Unix, a computer operating system, from the 1980's till 2000. In 2000 they sold their Unix holdings and renamed themselves Tarantella, Inc, and were eventally bought out by Sun Microsystems.
The second is The SCO Group, which until 2002 was known as Caldera International, but changed their name after acquiring the Later company's Unix system. They became very notorious in the computer world for their ongoing series of lawsuits and claims that they 'own' the Linux operating system, and that it illegally contains their source code. All of which is rather ironic considering that they were a respected Linux company for almost a decade before they began these actions.

"SCO are a bunch of hypocrites for claiming that Linux stole code from them, when they were selling Linux for 10 years!"
