Roatan is the largest of the three islands that make up the Bay Islands located off the northern coast of Honduras. The other two islands are to the East: Guanaja and to the West Utila. Roatan is 37 miles long and less than 5.0 miles wide at its widest point. The island has two municipalities the easternmost one is know as Jose Santos Guardiola and the westernmost one known as Roatan. The three main cities are Coxen Hole, French Harbour and Oak Ridge; Coxen Hole is the capital city and largest city on the island. West End is the tourist centre of the island. Roatan is very mountainous, with beautiful white sandy beaches with blue clear crystal waters. The island is conveniently located near the barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea second largest worldwide after Australia's Great Barrier Reef; making it great for scuba diving. Roatan is also famous for it's breathtaking sunsets.

English is widely spoken on the island, because of it's history as a former British Colony from 1550 to the 1700's. Spanish is also spoken. Ethnic groups on the island include:- Whites (of British descent), Blacks, Garifunas, Hispanics ( from the mainland) and Miskito Indians. Both the Garifunas and Miskito Indians have each their own dialects which the speak. Roatan has an International Airport, and also a daily ferry to La Ceiba the Galaxy Wave; weekly Cruises arrive in Roatan: Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Lines.
