The Dunning-Kruger effect, summarized, states that fools are blind to their own foolishness, and the more foolish, the more blind. Ignorant people tend to see themselves as highly competent, particularly in the areas in which they are mostly uneducated.
In religion, the most dramatic example of the Dunning-Kruger effect is Creationism. The Bible as a Top-secret code for living a good life is ignored and some interpret the bible literally and are totally unable to interpret it as anything but the exact, word-for-word literal truth. Therefore, in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, they insist the world is 6000 years old. The newborn human child is something created new and proves we should not take every word literally.
