Was commented on by Shuhei Yoshida that red line indicated a heat warning. And that the reports of Red Line of Death are "not true" per twitter message. This was in response to reports prior to launch and on display models.
Since launch further reports of RLOD have appeared and been documented. Many appearing to have no correlation with heat issue and appearing at instance of turning on system.
