The idea for the chain came from a combination of a pizza parlor and ice cream palace On September 15, 2022, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and would close several corporate-owned locations.

In 2022, Happy Joe's has plans to expand their operations to the Middle East and North Africa. They have plans to open at least 25 new restaurants across Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. over the course of 10 years. The first locations the chain plans to open will be in Cairo, Egypt, where they had one previously
