The word is informal and affectionate, used between either close brothers, or even close friends, and in Italian is taken to mean "big bro." It is not to be confused with the literal translations, "maggiore fratello", which is extremely formal and literal for "older brother", or "grande fratello", which is a translation of George Orwell's Big Brother in the novel 1984.
