A shortened form of the "diaphragmatic startle" response where the diaphragm briefly contracts as the phrenic nerve is manipulated during surgeries such as thoracic outlet decompression.

The phrenic nerve descends along the surface of the anterior scalene muscle. To confirm its identity, gently manipulate it to elicit a dartle response.
