Conservatism is a political philosophy that is used in politics trying to keep tradition and avoiding changes in countries. Conservatism is rightist, not far-right but definitely not leftist.
Liberal(believes in Liberalism): I told you, we MUST raise the tax for the rich!

Democratic conservatism

Share definition Flag
Democratic conservatism is characterized by a set of values and beliefs that is distinct from liberalism such as an emphasis on small government, moralism, and individualism. In contrast to classical liberalism, conservatism emphasizes the rule of law, traditional social and moral standards, and respect for authority. It also holds that society should be regulated to preserve the traditional order. In the United States, Democratic conservatism is an ideology that is mostly associated with the Republican Party, though it has a history in the Democratic Party their views on foreign policy, social issues, and military affairs have been criticized. Modern Democratic conservatism believes that religion, civil rights, traditional family values, and free markets should be supported, but that government should be limited, and the federal government should be restructured to be more efficient. They hijacked the Republican Party after the 1990s and began to use the Republican Party to promote their ideology which was the opposition to liberal policies such as abortion, gun control, gay rights, and environmentalism. In other words, they are the Dixiecrats of the 21st century.
Democratic conservatism in the United States is the main reason why Republicans are accused of racism and homophobia.

compassionate conservatism

Share definition Flag
A phrase coined by the Republicans for the 2000 presidential election in an effort to divert focus from the fact that in recent history the party had not been known for its compassion. Thus, a camouflage over reality, a diversion of attention from unflattering fact, a ruse, a marketing gimmick to cover up a weakness by asserting that you actually have the strength when you don’t.
“In his Inaugural Address, the President called on Americans to become citizens, not spectators. Since that time the President has used compassionate conservatism as his governing philosophy as the Administration has moved to tackle some of society's toughest assignments, such as educating our children, fighting poverty at home, and helping poor countries around the globe.”

A myth.

No, really, the campaign tool that worked for Bush in 2000. (Of course, he didn't, technically, WIN, but y'know, he came close enough.) But pretty quickly he realized that, with Tom DeLay running Congress and the media busy taping its own mouth over, he didn't have to do the whole "compassionate" bit.
"Gee, I like that compassionate conservatism Bush practiced."
"When was that? When he cut taxes for the rich while emasculating our social programs? When he denied birth control to AIDS-stricken Third World countries? When he killed thousands of innocent people in a meaningless oil-war?"
"Uh... good point."

Striver

Share definition Flag
The striver is an interesting phenomenon that is seen across college campuses. In essence, the striver is an over-achiever who comes from a working or middle class family. He may be an immigrant. He may have been a slacker in HS who was "born again" into an academic wunderkind. Or he may just be an over-achiever who is keeping at it.

The striver is willing to sacrifice his social life at the expense of Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. The striver is the guy who stays at the library long after you are gone. The striver is the guy who takes 30 credits/semester and considers anything below an A/4.0 failure. The striver doesn't work on campus, he is too busy finding ways to pad his resume instead of working retail or workstudy. The striver lets his grades pay his education by applying to ten scholarships a year.

The striver is a future Soros/Fullbright/Rhodes/Gates/Marshall/etc. fellow. The striver lives to study. For the striver, their fun comes from the rewards they expect to receive in return for their diligence. Be it Law School, B-School, academia, or politics. The striver seeks to find the American Dream through academic success.
Anthony was a striver. He transfered from a TTT to an IVY and graduated in 2 years. He studied his ass off and went to Penn Law. He got a Biglaw offer. But lost it all because of an unmoderated mesasgeboard.
