Cowboy Chemistry

Methods applied in a chemistry laboratory setting that are intended to cut corners and save time. It is also done frequently in poorly funded laboratories due to lack of materials.

Some examples include:

Sparging a solvent for an air sensitive reaction for 30 minutes rather than the recommended 1.5-2 hours.
Rinsing used glassware once with an organic solvent and reusing.
Choosing an acid/base on the basis of availability, rather than literature precedence.
Preceding to the next synthetic step without thorough purification.

Negative root causes for adapting these methods are typically hunger, tiredness, laziness or depression. On the other hand, these methods are often efficiently applied by those who have achieved a well developed intuition for the chemistries.

"Dude I am so hungry, I'm just gunna cowboy chem this work-up so I can get some taco-bell before they close."

"I told Dr. ______ my reaction didn't work because the starting material was oxidized, but honestly I cowboy chem'd the work-up and I think I decomposed the product."

"Rules are made so that the less adept make as few mistakes as possible. If you're smart you can do some cowboy chemistry to save a lot of time and materials."

the hardest f*cking class at del norte. Run by the laziest department of teachers I've ever seen. It takes 1 month for them to grade tests. You'll learn how to copy UT Quest answers and lab reports like an expert. Tests are so hard that they have a 50% curve.

I got a 20% on my first AP Chemistry exam.

Something usually done the weekend, or sunday, or day before it is due, with absolutely no work done on it prior. Often associated with random Urban Dictionary searches, music, youtube, laughter, that's what she said jokes, and pure procrastination. The affiliation with these items and/or actions are mainly wastes of time and complete distractions to the actual work, chemistry project.

A High School subject that doesn't have to be so damn necessarily hard to understand. If the book authors learned how to write in lamence terms for us non-scientists, maybe we should be able to cover the whole 30 chapter book in a hour. But noooo... those geeks really had to make it difficult. Actually, they add nothing but demonstrations and no official formulas, and they use big words to explain something as simple as a damn "mole" measurement. Therefore we have to take pen and paper and make our own damn formulas, no thanks to that $50.00 piece of crap.

I read chapter 1 to chapter 10, 75% of it consists of irrelevant situations of how to use what we are learning, in ways we never even thought it could be useless enough. 10% of it is actual examples where you must stare with a blank face and make up your own formulas, 15% is review work which you don't know how to do.
