The previous definition was “in a literal sense” but Gen Z has morphed, changed, and exacerbated the use of this word so that it now means figuratively.
Gen Z-er: Dude I am literally dying right now
Gen X: Should I call an ambulance?? What’s wrong??? Are you okay????
Gen Z-er: Huh? No nothing is wrong but this meme I looked at made me kinda smile.

Get the litering mug.
In description of an event, usually a party, a word to strongly emphasize how lit everyone was. A literal party is a drunken mayhem but usually means everyone had a good time.
- Did you manage to make it to that party last night?
- I did. It was a literal night and everyone hooked up. You missed out!
- I'm so stupid. I hate missing parties that get literal!
