Any college's reputation comes down to opinion, some opinions more qualified than others.
And I understand if current/past FIU students want to call this school 'prestigious' or 'excellent,' but
that's more a showing of school loyalty than any type of objectivity.
This school by virtually any sense is a safety school in Florida. It is that "I didn't get into any other four year universities so, ugh, I guess I will go here" type of school.
It has a better reputation than some of Florida's community colleges but it's hard to say anything more positive than that.
U.S. News Report is generally respected as the leading authority on how colleges measure up. I think that is the first source people consult when comparing universities and deciding where to apply or enroll.
These are the most recent U.S. News rankings of some recognizable national universities.

However if you pay no mind to the leading assessor of college quality, then maybe you can be proud to go here, I don't know. Just my opinion anyway.

Get the Forbidden Love mug.Who were born and raised in Florida. Our go to store is Publix and the beach is our home. We all hate tourist and snowbirds. Floridians are used to the bipolar weather and hurricane season. We hate outsiders and only enjoy the company of those who are true Floridians . don’t come down to Florida for a year and say your a Floridan when really your from New Jersey. Most people don’t consider us southerners but if you go down into the Jacksonville/bryceville parts of Florida you’ll really see that we are true southerners. Down there mudding on rangers is the best thing to do. In mid Orlando is where you’ll find the snowbirds. Elderly people on golf carts everywhere eating at crackerbarrel.
Tourists: I’ve lived in Florida for two years so I’m basically a Floridian

good place to find hipsters/crusties,
people that drink pbr, blue moon etc, wear flannel tees, american apperal and Engineering,ride fixed gear bikes at all times. have a diverse and eclectic music selection/ shows, smoke good bud and are either enlightening and intellectually friendly, or stuffy and arrogant aka 'wastes'
those who smoke cigarettes, which are normally camel filters, American spirits, sky dancers, or L&Ms, call them stoges. some pretty cool hippie chicks live in gainesville, but you just have to find them. talk to some of them and they will blow your mind with their thoughts.
i dont have the energy to socially break down anyone else, but you get the point.
its also super easy to go to lame places or scary places like :08, the venue, liquid, frat parties, gator game tail gates and others.
choose wisely
