when programs on your computer declare war on each other, stealing each other's default filetypes (like video being opened by quicktime, itunes, windows media player, or VLC). They keep fighting over them, driving the user crazy.

Aargh! My programs are in a file association war. First realplayer opens mp3 files, then itunes, then windows media player! Make them stop!!!

(n.) To beat up or assault someone who's indebted to a beating.

To 'file taxes' is to seek revenge from a previous situation or issue. Although the phrase can be used to describe a simple assault, it's more effective if used to replace the phrase, "I owe someone a fight."
