Blue Collar Man

An amazing rock song by the band Styx. Released in 1978, "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" was the first single from the Pieces of Eight album.
I'll take those long nights, impossible odds
Keeping my eye on the keyhole
If it takes all that to be just what I am
Well I'm gonna be a blue collar man

Poppin' ya collar

A phrase generally used in the hip hop lexicon. It describes not only an action, but also a general attitude. The term was originally used in this sense by the rapper E-40. When used by E-40, and many other hip hop artists including Three 6 Mafia in their song Poppin My Collar, the term refers to the act of pulling one's collar, or the clothing where one's collar would be (as when wearing a t-shirt), with the thumb and fingertips. One then releases the clothing in varying degrees of flamboyance. Used in this sense, "poppin' ya collar" is more about the attitude and message of confidence portrayed in so doing than any clothing style (see upturned collar). E-40 immortalized the term (and the accompanying attitude), in his song Pop Ya Collar from his album Loyalty and Betrayal.
1. After you get your car officially pimped, xzibit will be poppin' ya collar.

2. Never confuse the international sign for welling with poppin' ya collar.

pop your collar

To flip your collar up on your polo shirt. Very common practice for guys in fraternities and other college-age preppy types. The guy who does this is often referred to as "that guy."
Ronald could never convince anyone that he really popped his collar for practical neck insulation and was not in fact "that guy."

upturned collar

An upturned collar, often called a "popped collar", is -- as the term obviously states -- a collar that has been upturned. It is best-known for its role during the 2000's as a part of "preppy" culture, something that many believe has worn out its welcome.
College Student 1: "My word, Lawrence, do you see that fellow student with the most audacious dress?"

College Student 2: "Egads! The youth with the upturned collar? Why, he must be visually impaired -- indeed, certainly! -- for he cannot see his current physical state; naturally, if he could, he would relieve his collar of its outdated duty posthaste!"

College Student 1: "Quite."
