To gain value or an advantage QUICKLY by controlling or manipulating an object or situation.
In investing, flipping is more than just selling for profit. You must make the
deal quick. If the
deal isn’t quick profit, it’
s simply selling.
In drug dealing, you
may flip an ounce. Meaning you got the ounce and turned around and sold it for more quickly (usually within a
day if not hours). It is not holding
long term.
On
TV, there is a show called “Flip this House”, where they show the buying, estimating, renovating and selling of a house. Most
people focus on the construction aspect and miss that flipping is really the objective of buying the house, keeping renovation cost
low enough to make a profit and selling it as quick as possible. Most investors try to sell the house before the have to make payments. Some investors purchase property and sell it to someone else while still under contract. This is the ultimate flip. Selling
something you
don’t even own yet, and in many cases, have never been to or had in possession.
“Flipping the script” is to change the way things are turning out abruptly. Taking a situation that is not beneficial to you and making it beneficial quickly, often with a swift action or event.
Notice every use of “flip” is for your advantage and must be quickly.
