A piece of rope used for wiping the ass, swinging from the fore deckinga criss-cross of planking/rope/bowsprit netting, into the sea-used for soil cleaning and dropped back into the sea, to be used by next sailor.

Hence, an ass wipe. 1800 onward, on wooden ships.
