a girlwife is a sort of charicature of heterosexual feminity, one utilized most often by closeted or semi-closeted queer people for the explicit purpose of receiving positive feedback from straight men. when adopting the personality of a girlwife, individuals will begin to dress in a hyperfeminine manner and conform to feminine stereotypes. to be considered a girlwife or to be girlwifing, and individual must:
1. be expressing femininity in a way that does not feel natural to them, but is expected of them
2. reject all notion of queerness and temporarily adopt the label of "straight"
3. have their main goal to be acceptance from straight men/assimiltion into straight society

"Did you hear Syd's boyfriend threatened to leave them for being queer? That's probably why they started girlwifing so hard when he's around."

"Maya used to be much more butch, and she came to Pride with us every year! But ever since she got in a relationship with Tyler she's turned into his little girlwife."

"The" former girlfriend that you went out with for a long time, should have married but didn't, and today is the object of your secret, social-media only tryst. I mean, after all, you never see her anyway, even though you wish you could.

G: "Been in touch with Lucy?"
B:"I haven't seen her in years, man. Why would you ask me that?"
G: "Dude, everyone knows she's your ex-girlwife."

1. A woman who is your girlfriend that you do everything with as if you were married and people frequently mistake you as married. However, marriage is not an option because you both agree neither wants to be married, one or both of you are already married to someone else, or for whatever reason, and marriage is not possible.

2. A term used to define a girlfriend who is also a wife but for whatever reason you both agree not to marry but agree to live together in a mutually monogamous relationship.

"No, we're not married. She's my girlwif."

"No, she's not my wife. She's my girlwif."
