Short for emergency backup goaltender.

In high level hockey, each team must have 2 goaltender ready to play in case the one playing gets injured. The ebug is hired by the arena in case the second goaltender has to be replaced. The ebug plays on the team that needs him, so he can play against the team that hires him.

It is important to note that the ebug must not be a high level goaltender, so it’s generally not a good idea to put the ebug instead of your 2nd goalie.
The most well known ebug is (at the time 42yo) David Ayres, who managed to win the game (6-3) with the California Hurricanes against the Maple Leafs on the 22/02/2020. David Ayres had to fill in the second period since both of California’s goalies got injured. David Ayres was a zamboni driver and worked for the Maple Leafs as the match took place in Toronto.
