Transcoscience

A critical term for the tendency to treat science, scientific evidence, and the scientific method as if they existed on a transcendental plane—above and beyond material and human reality, immune to social context, historical contingency, or human fallibility. This mirrors how theology was treated in the Middle Ages: as an unquestionable, divine authority that sits outside ordinary existence. Transcoscience turns “Science” (capital S) into a secular god: its pronouncements are infallible, its methods are sacred, and its practitioners are high priests. The term exposes the irony of worshipping a method that prides itself on skepticism. When someone says “Science says…” as if it were a final, indisputable oracle, they are performing transcoscience.

Example: “He refused to discuss the limitations of peer review, insisting that ‘Science has spoken’—pure transcoscience, treating a human institution as if it were a timeless, transcendent authority.”
