(verb): to counter a person, proposition, or argument, à la Channel 4 journalist Cathy Newman, by misrepresenting it, specifically with the formula "So what you're saying is..." followed by the misrepresentation.

When people find themselves unable to respond to a claim with a cogent objection, sometimes they will Newmanize their opponents instead.

Cathy Newmaning

When you're in the middle of a discussion and you make a point, and the other person starts rattling off straw men versions of your comment and trying to make you defend the words they just put in your mouth, they are "Cathy Newmaning" you. Named after an infamous debate between Jordan Peterson and Cathy Newman.

Alex: Apples are different than oranges

Brenda: So you're saying apples are superior to oranges. So you're saying oranges should be treated less well than apples. So you're saying we should stop growing oranges and only grow apples from now on. So you're saying it's OK to burn orange trees because they are a blight on the environment. So you're saying....

When a person twists the words of what another is saying to suit their own ideological narrative and to make said other person seem sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, Islamaphobic, etc. While starting the their rebuttal with "so you were saying."

I told her that I like Coca Cola and she Cathy Newmanned me by telling me I love Coca Cola Death Squads.

Overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates everyone. A person who gleefully takes the world around him to pee pee pants city.

Newmanspeak

A dishonest rhetorical device in which one accuses one's interlocutor of having said something objectionable which they never, in fact, said. Related to Newspeak in George Orwell's 1984, it is named after British broadcaster Cathy Newman following a notorious interview in which she repeatedly used this approach against Canadian academic Jordan Peterson, usually introducing her comments with "So basically you're saying...?".

Peterson: There's multiple reasons for the pay gap. One of them is gender but that's not the only reason. If you're a social scientist worth your salt you never do a univariate analysis. You say women in aggregate are paid less than men. OK, well then, we break it down by age, we break it down by occupation, we break it down by interest, we break it down by personality ...

Newman: So basically you're saying it doesn't matter if women aren't getting to the top, because that's just a fact of life.

This term is related to the effects that the Queensland public experienced under the then premier Campbell Newman's changes to public service funding and the ongoing consequences of that turmoil.

That decision is Newmanistic and short sighted in its terms.
