1. a member of an elite group of individuals based in Maryland.
2. a supporter of Sir Madeline I, II, or III.

First used in above context in late 1800s; created as a satiric remark for the supporters of politician Sir Madeline I.
He supported Sir Madeline, so his friends called him a Madelinian.
