Luftg'selcht

A humorous Austrian slang term describing a person who appears dazed, slow, or mentally foggy — like someone who’s high, but isn’t. The word literally means “air-smoked,” a twist on the Austrian dialect term g'selcht (smoked meat), implying someone’s brain has been "smoked" by air alone.

Origin:
Derived from Austrian dialect. Refers to the “Luftg’selchter Pfarrer von St. Thomas am Blasenstein” — a mummified priest on display in Upper Austria. The term playfully evolved to describe the zombified state of being slow and mentally absent, minus any substances.
– “Oida, wie lang brauchst du zum Schuach binden – bist heut wieder komplett luftg’selcht oder was?”
– "Hawarra, des is a Radlweg und koa Parkplatz. Hoffentlich bist wenigstens angsoffn und ned anfoch luftg'selcht!"

Luftg’selcht

Definition:
A uniquely Austrian slang term used to describe someone who acts slow, confused, or spaced out — like they’re “smoked” but without actually smoking anything. It’s like their brain is “smoked by air” (Luft = air, g’selcht = smoked). Basically, you’re mentally foggy, distracted, or just plain slow — but sober.
Origin:
From the Austrian dialect g’selcht meaning “smoked” (like smoked meat). The term “luftg’selcht” jokingly refers to someone who behaves as if they were smoked (high or dazed), but only by air — no substances involved. Inspired by the “Luftg’selchter Pfarrer von St. Thomas am Blasenstein,” a famous mummy in Upper Austria.
“Am Montag bin ich voll luftg’selcht, brauch erstmal Kaffee.”

“Bist du heut wieder luftg’selcht oder was?”

Der Hans ist komplett luftg’selcht, der schaut dauernd in die Luft.”
