In the story of warframe, Kuva's physical form is a blackened liquid with Crimson hues, while being a part of a process known as "Continuity".
Applications and history (WARNING: SPOILERS included):
Beginning with the primary usage known as Continuity, Kuva is used to take one person's conscious, and establish it into another person's body, essentially a form of "ceremonial bodysnatching".
There are currently two known forms of Kuva:
Blue Kuva, and Crimson Kuva. The former is mentioned only in an event known as Naberus.
Blue Kuva, as described in-game, will allow a being to take a body, but only for a short time, before returning to their own.
Crimson Kuva is used in a lot of lore aside from Continuity. Here is a list of all uses and possibilities:
