Energy Pistols

A handheld directed‑energy weapon that fires bolts, beams, or pulses of charged particles, plasma, or coherent light. Unlike slug‑throwers, energy pistols have no recoil, minimal sound, and can be dialed from “stun” to “vaporize.” They are the sidearm of choice for space cops, cyberpunk runners, and anyone who doesn’t want to explain bullet holes to the landlord. Drawbacks: battery life is measured in shots, and overheating turns your grip into a branding iron. The ultimate equalizer – until your power cell dies mid‑duel.
Energy Pistols Example: “He pulled his energy pistol, set it to ‘warm’, and the mugger’s gun melted into a puddle. Then the pistol beeped twice and went dead. Classic.”

Energy-Directed Pistols

A formal variant of the energy pistol, emphasizing the “directed‑energy” aspect – meaning it uses focused electromagnetic radiation (laser, microwave) rather than particle beams or plasma. Energy‑directed pistols are often lower in raw damage but more precise and quieter. They are popular for covert ops, riot control (dazzler modes), and anyone who wants to cut a lock from across the room. The beam is invisible unless you have smoke or dust. The effect is instantaneous and often odorless.
Energy-Directed Pistols Example: “The energy‑directed pistol hummed softly. The lock on the door glowed, melted, and dripped onto the floor. No one in the next room heard a thing. Perfect for quiet entrances.”

These terms follow the same pattern as above, but using the generic "Directed Energy" (DE) label. A DE Igniter Pistol is any hand-held beam weapon meant to ignite targets. A DE Igniter Gun is its larger, more potent sibling. A DE Igniter Weapon is the overarching class. The "DE" prefix is used when the specific technology (laser vs. plasma) is unknown, classified, or interchangeable within the platform.
Example: "The security detail carried directed energy igniter pistols. In the dry, oxygen-rich atmosphere of the colony, they were told to set them to 'wide-dispersion.' It meant a stray shot at the ground wouldn't drill a hole; it would start a raging grass fire that could consume the entire habitat dome. Their safety briefing was basically a firefighter's worst nightmare." Directed Energy Igniter Pistol/Gun/Weapon
