Country Club Christian
A person who treats Christianity like a Costco membership: show up occasionally, pay some dues, and assume that means you’re entitled to special benefits for the rest of the week.
Country Club Christians often believe that attending church on Sunday, tossing a few bucks in the collection plate, and posting a Bible verse on Facebook gives them enough spiritual credit to spend Monday through Saturday being rude, judgmental, spiteful, and generally unpleasant to anyone they consider beneath them.
Common targets include cashiers, waiters, retail employees, customer service workers, and basically anyone who is required by their job to remain polite while being yelled at.
They can frequently be identified by their ability to turn a minor inconvenience into a full-scale moral crisis, complain about a supposed “war on Christians,” and react to the phrase “Happy Holidays” as though someone personally drove a bulldozer through the Nativity scene.
Despite frequently preaching about kindness, humility, forgiveness, and loving thy neighbor, the Country Club Christian often seems to believe those rules are more like suggestions intended for everybody else.
The “country club” part comes from treating religion less like a moral code and more like an exclusive social club: membership proves you’re one of the good people, regardless of how you actually behave.
