Counter-signaling

To proudly proclaim yourself to have a trait that you, in reality, are deficient in.

Me: "He was counter-signaling when he put "Non-performative Feminist in his Instagram bio."

You: "You're right! If that were truly the case he wouldn't feel the need to put that in his bio at all!

Counter-signaling

To proudly proclaim a trait upon yourself in order to mask the fact that in reality, you are deficient in that area.

Me: "@vleshwater on Instagram was Counter-signaling when they put "NON-PERFORMATIVE FEMINIST" in their bio."

You: "You're right! They wouldn't feel the need to put that in their bio if it was the genuine truth of the matter.
