Clariphany

Clariphany (Latin: clarus, radiance + Greek: -phany, showing-forth) is the profound affective emotion of experiencing meaning radiating from a work of art. It is a peak aesthetic event where the meaning of a piece—whether originally intended by the creator or actively constructed by the observer—suddenly reveals itself in a felt, emotional strike.

This coinage elegantly unifies three major aesthetic traditions into a single named event: the Thomistic-Joycean concept of claritas (the radiant truth or "whatness" of an object), the Indian rasa tradition's camatkāra (the sudden strike of aesthetic wonder and astonishment), and modern reception theory (the active role of the audience in meaning-making).

Crucially, Clariphany is responsive and requires an exterior object, but its impact is entirely internal. It sits at the deepest end of human transformation because true Clariphany does not simply confirm what the perceiver already believes. Instead, the "showing-forth" of meaning is so potent that it fundamentally restructures the perceiver’s internal world. It is the exact moment a work of art stops being something you merely look at, and becomes an affective event that permanently alters how you see.
In a narrative context:

"Standing alone in the gallery, she experienced a profound clariphany; the abstract sculpture suddenly radiated a meaning so deeply felt that it permanently altered her understanding of grief."

In a critical or academic context:

"The essay argues that the immersive exhibit is designed not for mere entertainment, but to induce a clariphany—a radiant showing-forth of meaning that fundamentally restructures the viewer's worldview."

In the context of the performing arts:

"As the symphony reached its agonizing final chord, the silence that followed wasn't just quiet—it was a collective clariphany, as the entire audience simultaneously absorbed the full emotional weight of the composer's intent."

I thought she'd need multiple trips to carry her phone, keys, wallet, and Starbucks to her car since she needed the other hand to open the door, but she used her impressive girl grip to carry everything in one hand.
