You had a customizable character in either human or pixie form that you could take on quests, enter battles, go fishing, farm, mine, adopt pets, build, craft, and explore the open world. Free Realms reached 10 million players in April 2010, where it peaked. Free Realms remained a popular kids game up until 2014, where the user-base began to dwindle and Sony closed its doors on the SOE; "sunsetting" multiple games such as Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and Wizardry Online. SOE was then sold to a company called Daybreak Games.
Free Realms was unique in its existence as an entirely family-friendly MMORPG, one of the first of its kind. It was a safe space for children and teens to express their individuality, develop their creativity, make friends, and explore an open world setting without the intensity of an adult MMO. It's lighthearted, comedic, and magical tones were showcased through a rich storyline, witty writing, high-quality graphics, and endless opportunities for exploration.
The world of Free Realms had several locations including Sanctuary, Seaside, Snowhill, Blackspore, Briarwood, Lakeshore, Merry-Vale, Shrouded Glade, and Sunstone Valley.
