Waifu Basics

A very horrific video clip. It starts with a young Japanese lady being invited into her boyfriend's apartment for lunch while the narrator tells the viewer what it means to be a good girlfriend. She enters the apartment and the narrator tells us that the boyfriend's name is Hiro. Hiro has prepared stir fry for the two of them to eat for lunch. When they sit down at the table to eat it, the lady then vomits multiple times into the bowl, covering the stir fry in vomit. Hiro is completely unfazed by this and seems rather fine that his lunch just got totally ruined. The two then go to the couch and she proceeds to kiss him. While she's kissing him, she vomits several times again and covers his entire face with vomit and pukes down his mouth. The video then ends with him choking on her vomit. Very nasty; guaranteed to make you throw up your breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next week or two.
Person 1: Hey man, have you seen this video "Waifu Basics"?

Person 2: No I haven't, it seems promising though since it doesn't seem to be one of those messed up shock films you showed me earlier.

*Shows him the video*

Person 2: I'm gonna go throw up like I've never thrown up before; thanks.

Waifu Probability Potential

The Waifu Probability Potential (WPP) refers to the chances that any particular form of media (mainly visual such as anime or video games) will have someone worthy enough to be your waifu. It is especially useful when trying to describe why you like a particular show or game when you do not in fact actually like the show, but rather just the character(s) in it. At the time of this writing there is no universally accepted standard for the WPP, but the potential itself of the Waifu Probability Potential as a universal metric cannot be overlooked.
The way I find anime, is I go on 4chan or /r/anime_irl and find the sauce to any anime girl that looks like she'd make a great waifu. These girls can then be said to have a high Waifu Probability Potential. They are not yet my waifu, but based on their appearance and my tastes in 2-D women, the probability or potential is then there, thus the WPP.

"What do you mean you don't know why you like Sword Art Online? Everyone knows its a bad anime!"
"Just look at Asuna though! Her WPP is through the roof!"

Waifu Effect

The Waifu Effect describes a phenomenon in which a fictional work or character gains popularity solely by containing what many people consider to be "waifu-material"(see "Waifu" entry for more info). The work in question often becomes famous for such, and the Waifu Effect can often (but not always) overshadow other elements, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Many shows/media intentionally exploit this phenomenon in order to market their products, which can also be used to hide negative qualities.

The Waifu effect is particularly noticeable within the fanart community, as it can shoot characters/works into the spotlight through the Waifu effect alone. In order for a work to benefit from the Waifu effect, the characters must be diverse and varied. They must have enough of a background to give artists a jumping-off point, but be open enough so that artists have enough wiggle room to insert their own creativity into it. Some big examples that exhibit the Waifu Effect phenomenon are Kantai Collection and Touhou Project.
Overwatch fan: Man, have you been seeing all the amazing Overwatch fanart from Japan artists lately?

JRPG enthusiast: That's unexpected, I thought that Japan didn't really like FPS games. Why would a western FPS like Overwatch ever be popular there?

Overwatch fan: Nah, it's the Waifu Effect, I'm tellin' ya. Put enough attractive and diverse female characters into your work and artists/social media are bound to jump on that shit.
