Reddit Special

A response to a question that offers non-responsive answer. The responder, rather than engaging with relevant knowledge, deflects by either answering a tangential question nobody asked, or requesting information irrelevant to the actual inquiry.

The contribution is 'technically' adjacent to the topic but functionally useless — it adds noise, dilutes the information space, and burdens the asker with restating what should have been clear. The behavior is common in online forums, where 'performative helpfulness' substitutes for actual experience.

Person 1: I asked the forum how to setup a home server, but they kept asking me why I needed a home server and told me to use AWS instead.

Reddit Panopticon

The panoptic condition on Reddit, where users are watched by moderators, administrators, bots, and other users through the platform’s unique features: karma scores track reputation; voting hides dissent; removals can be silent; and cross‑posting can expose past comments to hostile audiences. The Reddit Panopticon is maintained by the fear of being “brigaded,” downvoted into invisibility, or banned from a subreddit. Users learn to self-censor, to preface opinions with disclaimers, and to perform allegiance to subreddit norms—not because they agree, but because they feel watched.

Example: “He wanted to ask a nuanced question, but the Reddit Panopticon made him phrase it as a popular opinion first, to avoid being downvoted into oblivion.”

PhD Reddit 

A derogatory term when a person presents a 'credible' argument on the Internet to support their position despite the argument is false. Mostly (and recommended to be) used for science deniers and to know-it-all person. May be synonymous to Karen MD, but this term is more broad.

Person A (an anti-vaxx): I have a list of blog articles ( mostly cherry-picked) that suggest vaccines cause autism. Therefore, vaccines cause autism.

Person B: Cool, pretty sure you have a PhD Reddit to state that statement. What's the title of your thesis, fam?
