Also the show is about a teen around the 18th century and he lives in a town that the king has banned magic. Also as you guessed he has magic and he is also the princes survant. He is trying his best to protect the kingdom from all sorts of things and also trying to hide is magic abilities. To understand it better you need to start watching the series.
