hipsterati

a term derrived from literati, i.e. a person that uses his acumen to investigave deep issues of human existence. In this case, the hipsterati use their acumen (and we use this term lightly) to keep up on the pressing issues of the latests microtrends. They tend to move in "too-hip-for-thou" cliques and pass judgement on what is and isn't in.
-How was the show last night?
-It was amazing, but it was so crowded because the Hipsterati were out en masse!

hipster

A pretentious and self-absorbed hypocrite who has abandoned their sense of identity to fit an exaggerated trend or theme. In order to cope with their confusing psychological denial and low self esteem, these sad individuals project their lack of definition and depth at the world thereby inflating their own perceptions of uniqueness. They can be found simultaneously condemning the cultural "mainstream" on superficial topics such as style or fashion, while engaging in hyperbolic applications of those same superficial aspects.

While some of these individuals may genuinely struggle to become more cultured, most do not have a genuine interest (or aptitude) and are simply trying to fit into a crowd that wants to reject fitting in to the "mainstream". Conversely, a socially well adjusted individual who truly appreciates and participates in art, for example, may have no inclinations towards the hipster subculture. There is somewhat of a one-way, pretend inclusion that the hipster conceives of for him or herself that is a form of mild delusion.

Hipsters present a curious irony by considering themselves superior, more cultured and more individualistic, while rejecting the actual depth, perspective and variation in people around them that is at the core of individuality.
Guy 1 : Why was that guy rude for no reason?
Guy 2 : He's a hipster.
Guy 1 : Ahh - I guess that's why hes dressed to solicit attention and we're not at a costume party.
Guy 2 : Hipsters are douchebags.
Guy 1 : Yeah, I've heard that before.

Hipster, or Gay?

Ever have a hard time telling if the man you see across the bar from you at your favorite artisan coffee house is a hispter, or gay?

Ever have a hard time telling if the woman listening to alternative music sitting on a park bench with her 30 year old bike next to her is a hipster, or gay?

Ever see people sitting around trying to distinguish those walking by: hipster, or gay?

A game commonly played by residents of urban settings, college campuses, and visitors to hipster enclaves. The right answer is never what you think it is.
"See that guy with the super tight jeans and the American Apparel deep v-neck tee? Is he a hipster, or is he gay?"

"See that girl with the turtle shell glasses with no lenses and four scarves? Is she a hipster, or is she a lesbian?"

"Is he really wearing a fedora, flannel, fingerless gloves, sunglasses, and sporting some very interesting facial hair? Hipster, or gay?

Hipstercrite

A person who is both a hipster and a hypocrite. This person likes to put up the appearance of being progressive, radical, artistic and/or bohemian. However, they don't really adhere to the principals they want people to think they espouse. For instance, a hipstercrite could say they hate George Bush because he doesn't care about poor people or minorities, and yet at the same time live in an expensive condo that gentrifies the surrounding poor minorities' neighborhood, ultimately driving housing costs up and existing communities out.

Hipstercrites do not understand that their own actions conflict with their supposed political and social opinions. Mostly, they hold these opinions to be trendy.

Hipstercrites are often young people in college or fresh out of college who are living off their parents' money.

Other examples:

Wearing an outfit that appears to be from a thrift store, which actually cost hundreds of dollars at Urban Outfitters.

Living in a condo in East Austin that your parents bought for you as an investment.

Traveling to countries and feeling proud of their travels. Again, the money for these travels and their lifestyle comes from their parents.

Participating in an unpaid internship yet not having a job.
Person A: "Elena really is doing a lot for society! She works for a non-profit and gets to travel all the time."

Person B: "Nah, she's not doing shit for society. She's just a hipstercrite."

hipster goth

Someone who tries to be hip by dressing gothic, with skinny black jeans, shirts, ties, waistcoats and sometimes make-up. Frequently found around Shoreditch, Hoxton and Camden in London. Listens to such music as The Horrors, S.C.U.M, Ulterior and Howling Bells, as well as such classic goth bands as The Cure and Siouxsie & the Banshees. Often smokes Black Devils: black, chocolate-flavoured cigarettes.
Cynic: "Look at those fucking lame-ass hipster goths! They think they're so cool and alternative, but really they're just following a trend!"

Admirer: "Look at those übercool hipster goths! They're so fashionable and so nonchalant!"
