Sociology of Epistemology

Perhaps the most meta of the sociology fields, this is the study of how societies and cultures collectively decide what counts as "knowledge" in the first place. It doesn't ask what we know, but how we know that we know. It explores why a medieval peasant's epistemology (revelation, tradition) is different from a modern scientist's (empiricism, peer review), and treats both as social products of their time. It's the sociology of how truth itself is manufactured.

Example: "Arguing with him is pointless because we're operating under different epistemologies. He trusts vibes; I trust data. This is a sociology of epistemology problem."

Social Sciences of Epistemology

Perhaps the most reflexive of the meta-fields: using social science to study how societies collectively decide what counts as knowledge in the first place. It examines how epistemological standards—what we accept as evidence, what we consider proof, who we trust as authorities—are shaped by social structures, power relations, and cultural contexts. It reveals that even our most fundamental assumptions about "how we know" are, at least in part, social products rather than pure logical necessities.

Human Sciences of Epistemology

The philosophical and historical study of how human beings have understood "knowing" across cultures and eras, enriched by insights from psychology, anthropology, and cognitive science. Anthropology of Epistemology

The study of how different human communities organize their systems of knowing—what counts as knowledge, who gets to claim it, how it's transmitted, and how it's validated—using anthropological methods. It reveals that epistemology, the very theory of knowledge, varies across cultures in ways that can't be reduced to "us vs. them" or "rational vs. primitive." The anthropology of epistemology documents how some cultures privilege experiential knowledge, others prioritize transmitted tradition, others elevate analytic reasoning—and how these different epistemological systems produce different kinds of truth.
