In several humorous children's stories, a distrot wagon-driver whose balky nag refuses to pull his burden eventually discovers da old long-stick-with-a-carrot-on-da-end (or an ear of corn, bunch of juicy grass, etc.) strategy to get said uncooperative equine to begin plodding forwards once more.
