onion ninjas

They sneak up you when you're watching a movie and a real touching scene comes along and all of a sudden tears are streaming down your cheeks. Hallmark movies are infested with onion ninjas.
We were watching the movie Crash when that little girl ran outside to give her daddy the "invisible cloak" just as the angry Persian guy shot at him, and we all thought he had shot Michael Pena's daughter--only to discover the Persian guy's daughter had earlier put blanks in his gun...oh boy, did the onion ninjas sneak up on everyone when we learned the little girl was OK.

ninjas cutting onions

A slang term for crying while observing something tearjerking, such as a sad film scene. This refers to both a ninja's alleged stealth abilities, and the irritation of the eyes by the fluids in an onion.
I was watching The Notebook yesterday. Damn ninjas cutting onions the whole time..

Fogey/fogy /fougi/ sl. (early 18C+, orig. Scot) old-fashioned, stuck-in-the mud.
Person with old fashioned ideas which he is unwilling to change: Come to the disco and stop being such an old fogey!
You think me an old fogeyand an old tory, his thoughtful voice said. I saw three generations since O’Connel’s time. I remember the famine. Do you know that the orange lodges agitated for repeal of the union twenty years before O’Connel did or before the prelates of your communion denounced him as a demagogue? You fenians forget some things. (James Joyce, Ulysses. Penguin Books,1992. p. 38)
