It is formed from dilute phosphoric acid hydration of safrole (sulfuric acid isn't used because sulfuric acid is an oxidizing acid which rearranges MDP2Pol (3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanol) to MDP1Pol (3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-1-Propanol). MDP2Pol is also formed by oxymercuration demercuration of safrole. MDP2Pol can be oxidized to MDP2P (3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanone) by either sodium chlorite or sodium hypochlorite in hydrochloric acid and the byproduct is chlorine gas (wear a gas mask and do the reaction outside). It can also be oxidized by lead acetate. 3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanol is also called Sesamyl-2-Propanol (Se2Pol, Ses2Pol, Sm2Pol), hydroxysafrole, and Sesamylisopropanol.

Meanwhile, ethanol produces acetaldehyde, a moderately toxic aldehyde, before becoming the harmless acetic acid. As a result, there is no hangover from 2-methyl-2-butanol but there is a temporary hangover from ethanol. The dose range of 2-methyl-2-butanol is 2ml to 12ml+.
