Noun 1. Themistocles - Athenian statesman who persuaded Athens to build a navy and then led it to victory over the Persians (527-460 BC) .

After persuading the Athenians to build a navy, Themistocles led the new fleet to victory over Persia in the Battle of Salamis (480).
