Tanzneid

(From Ger. Tanz, "Dance" + Neid, "envy")

Tanzneid is a complex form of envy directed aat anothers person's freedom, authenticity, or skill in physical expression through body movement.
It is defined not just by the desire to "move like that," but by a profound inability to do so. This inability stems from a perceived barrier that makes the envied movement feel unattainable, as if the observer is fundamentally "blocked" from achieving the same natural presence.

The source of this perceived inability can be Psychological/Mental (e.g, stage fright, social anxiety or self-consciousness), Identity-Based (e.g, gender dysphoria), Physical (e.g, physical limitation, disability, or a fundamental difference one's body), Comparative, Social/Contextual.

At its core, Tanzneid is the envy of someone else's harmonious and authentic physical expression when one's own feels blocked, inauthentic or impossible.

The word probably comes from the metalcore band Electric Callboy. The earliest known use of the word is mid-october 2025.
