Typically of women, the practice of being hidden away or constrained from society. Either self-imposed, or by society (as in several Muslim states).

She's gone into purdah during her exams.

In Mughal Empire, purdah was the usual state for most noble women.

It's a continuation on the glass ceiling/glass closet idea. In eastern westernised societies men and women do come to a party together but segregate themselves in different corners upon arrival. You can see eachother but you can't cross over to meet: The glass purdah rules.

She: Bye now for a while, I've to go to my own side.
He: Look but don't cross, the glass purdah rules!
She: Looking is better than touching and thank god they don't put down a black purdah any more.

Puddah 

A term of endearment. Given to people one really likes and shows affection too. It is a compliment, something people should strive to be called. Puddah is not a word to be taken lightly, it has the deepest meanings, and is only given to people that uphold the puddah-code of standards. Can be used in obscene or sexual ways.
