Paleoscience

An area of study within metascience that examines the structures, origins, and historical development of science—including primitive sciences, protosciences, and the early forms of knowledge-seeking that preceded modern scientific institutions. Paleoscience asks what came before: how ancient peoples observed nature, how pre-modern cultures systematized knowledge, how protoscientific practices evolved into what we now recognize as science. It studies not just the history of scientific ideas but the history of scientific structures—the institutions, practices, and social arrangements that made science possible. Paleoscience reveals that science has a deep past, that what we call science today emerged from earlier ways of knowing, and that understanding those origins illuminates the nature of science itself.
