Dickert's Bridge

Dickert's Bridge is a literary theorem that posits if a protagonist steps onto a rickety wooden bridge suspended over a chasm, it will fall. This led to the invention of the term "foreshadowing".

Chekhov was a hack.

Bridges are older than guns.
The first Shrek movie has an excellent example of Dickert's Bridge in action.
